How to Trace a Stolen Laptop

traceIn the event that your laptop is lost or stolen, you should have a program that is able to track it. There is a software called Adeona, an open source system for tracking the location of lost or stolen laptops that does not rely on the service of a third party. Open source means it’s available to everyone for free.

Adeona is easy to install and use, and should come very handy in case your laptop gets stolen. All you have to do is install the program on your laptop and on another desktop PC and you’ll be able to track its location. Another good thing about this software is that it protects your privacy. This means that only you, the owner, can track the laptop.

Adeona uses an open source storage service to store location updates sent by a small software client installed on the laptop. The client monitors and collects information (such as IP addresses and local network topology) that can be used to identify its current location. The trace will only be successful if the thief connects to a network with Internet connection. Then you can trace its IP address and notify the authorities, who will be able to retrieve the laptop for you. You won’t be able to see its geographical location, and even if you did, it is not a good idea to try and retrieve the laptop yourself.
